From movie directors (Baz Lurhman) to the British Skin Foundation, the advice is clear and simple - it doesn’t matter what creed or colour you are, your best bet in life is to wear sunscreen. There are so many excuses people have for not wearing any, but I am going to explore the wealth of options out there to make sure no one who reads this blog ever has an excuse again.
My first and most beloved sunscreen is a newer offering from Estee Lauder’s skin care range. Their Daywear formula has been revised to bump up the spf level from 15 to 25 and take out some of the unnecessary chemicals as well, I’m sure. Regardless, this is has proved to be an excellent buy, not only is it a very funky blue colour in the pot, it is also an excellent moisturiser as well. They give you enough in the jar to last a solid three to four months, so its good value for money. I do really love it because I know that I can freely run around in the sun without hurting my skin, and that is a wonderful feeling. The only downside I have found is it leaves my face a little bit shiny, which if you are cocoa coloured too, only highlights any dark blemishes. I tend to wear this on minimal make-up days, and it goes without saying I buff on some mattifying powder.
Let’s play a game, and call it Things I Want. You can start, but my guess is, if I suggested ‘clear, healthy skin’ you would shout “I want that!”. If you are completely honest with yourself, how high does ‘good’ skin rank on your list of things you are constantly striving for? For me it has and always will be on the top of my prayer list. From being an awkward pre-teen to recently having ghost-like sun-deprived skin from living in Scotland, my goal has always been to perfect my skin to the point of making foundation and concealers moot (or at least having the option to). I went into beauty writing because I was sure that working in the likes of Conde Nast, IPC Media and NatMags I would unlock the key to perfect skin. One thing quickly became apparent though, while top-notch magazines I love, like Marie Claire, can point out some of the very best beauty products on the market (within a decent budget, might I add), when it comes to skin care they are obviously courting more fair-skinned consumers. Unfortunately I will never want to know how to get a perfectly even fake-bake tan, I do however want to find ways to work with my chocolately complexion and unleash its beautiful potential.
